The answer to last Sunday's question is Acer palmatum or Japanese Maple.
Same family as the great big trees famed in New England for producing the syrup (yum) and closely related to the Sycamore, dontchaknow. In fact often you'll find a Maple grafted on to the root stock of a Sycamore, fact fans.
Now you know LOL.

Right, lol, well that explains why I didn't recognise it. We don't tend to have too many maples in Australia, and I can't remember any of ours being anything other than evergreen....

Awww shame, the Maple is a top tree! Try and track a potted one down for your garden, if it's not too expensive. Would look great creating shade over a pond perhaps. You'll be the envy of your neighbourhood. Maybe.
As a rule the Maple leaf is usually green, turning orange and red before falling off in the... well Fall. Or Autumn as we in the civilized world call it (sorry).
We call it Autumn too...
