Flight Of The...

The most recent series of Doctor Who suggested what happened to the humble Bee but the the truth is that the British Bee colonies really are suffering and being wiped out.

The short haired Bumblebee for example became extinct in the UK between 1988 and 2000. However rather than taking flight to a far off planet to avoid the Daleks, many may be found in New Zealand. It seems in the late 19th century they were shipped over on refrigerated lamb boats so they might pollinate clover crops.

Now Nature England are hoping to reintroduce this breed back into the UK. Mind you I don't think they'll be coming back via boat. Long may our summer barbeque's be plagued by the little fellows, they have a valuable job to do.

Apparently Dumbledore is an old English word for Bumblebee. You didn't think I'd post an image of an actual Bee did you? LOL
