I have to admit to being more than a little confused. Imagine you intend to make a so-called Big Ticket purchase, such as a new car or even a house. Most of us will have an idea of the maximum we are prepared to pay; you could say there can’t be many right minded people who would buy a car for example no matter the cost. Therefore for most of us, there is a point at which you are prepared to walk away if you can’t agree terms.
Today our Members of Parliament are yet again debating the terms of the UK’s departure from the European Union and our future relationship with the EU. Some MP’s are actively campaigning to remove the prospect of a “no deal” exit as an option. Here’s my confusion: if the UK can’t agree terms with the EU and you’ve removed the option of simply walking away, in order to honour the referendum vote, are we not forced to accept whatever the EU demands, buy that new car no matter the cost? Not much of a negotiating position is it?
