Look at me getting into the modern era: paying for the fuel for my car from the comfort of a phone App LOL. Whatever next!

You Can't Make This Stuff Up..?
Just heard a great quote (allegedly) attributed to a certain President:
"My grandparents didn't come to this country to have their jobs taken by immigrants."
Think about it, Mr President LOL.

Aussie Connection?
I can't help but wonder what connection exists between the city of Geelong in Victoria, Downunder and a row of Victorian era terraced workers houses in a town in Berkshire, UK? The former I suspect traces its roots from indigenous origins, while the latter is clearly much younger. Could it be someone involved in the construction of the worker's homes had visited or lived in Geelong and wished to memorialise the place? Or was it simply that it sounded exotic and this was an attempt at marketting a dream to those with minimal opportunities?

Personsize
Apparently the concept of Mansize tissues is evil and soon to be withdrawn. It seems the term is sexist and excludes women who might feel intimidated. Are you kidding me?!? The suggestion is that it reinforces the stereotype that men are big and butch, needing big powerful tissues and women are dainty and don't. Does anyone actually think this in 2019? Language and it's use is important but has anyone actually died or gone to war over an inappropriately named disposable handkerchief? What about the design of the packaging- you might argue those are macho colours. Perhaps they could appeal to female shoppers by using women friendly colours and designs; how about some pink? A tad patronising perhaps?
Getting back to the point, when talking about our species, should we now refuse to use the word Mankind or how about human?
Never mind that there is actual inequality in this world. Some in this country have to rely on charities and foodbanks to feed their children and the kindness of others to put a roof over their heads in winter. So long as we deal with nasty terms like Mansize all will be right.
Sometimes I just want to give up.
I'm keeping this box so in a thousand years time, archeologist will discover it and conclude we were all a bunch of macho bigots LOL.

Gibraltar 75
A little late I know. There have been quite a few coins issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings but this legal tender 50p from Gibraltar caught my attention...

Avon Calling
The actor Paul Darrow, perhaps best known for his television role as Avon in Blake's 7, has died aged 78 it has been announced. He was truly awesome in the role, which together with many other original cast members, he later reprised in audio adventures. Where of course the special effects and set design was far superior to the 1970's era TV incarnation LOL.
Sadly Peter Tuddenham (voice of Zen, Orac & Slave), Gareth Thomas (Blake) and Jacqueline Pierce (Servalan) are also no longer with us.
Darrow was also known more recently as the voice of Jack for the radio network Jack FM.
I had the good fortune a number of years ago to see Darrow perform on stage as Captain Vimes in an adaption of (another great love of mine) Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!" His casting and portrayal was wonderful, spot on, full of wit and knowing glances. At the close of that evenings performance, the cast had the honour of announcing Pratchett had just been awarded an OBE by HM the Queen. Happy days.
A poster from the tour.
